Run Derby 2023: In the thrilling contest of Home Run Derby, Vladimir Guerrero
Jr. triumphs, following in the footsteps of his father.
"Smack the balls out of the park," were the words of wisdom shared by Vladimir Guerrero Sr. with his son before the much-anticipated 2023 MLB Home Run Derby. This derby has established itself as one of the most eagerly awaited events in the baseball world, pitting eight of the league's mightiest power hitters against each other to determine who can launch the most homers. The participants are seeded based on their season's cumulative home run count and placed in a bracket format, with the top seed facing off against the eighth seed, the second seed against the seventh, and so on. Each batter has three minutes in the initial two rounds and two minutes in the final to unleash as many home runs as possible, with the freedom to choose their preferred pitcher. Having witnessed his father win the competition in 2007, the Toronto Blue Jays' superstar, Guerrero Jr., aspired to follow in his footsteps, aiming to create a remarkable first for the Home Run Derby by becoming part of the first father-son duo to claim this prestigious victory during the All-Star break. Without a doubt, Guerrero Jr. executed his
father's advice impeccably as he not only hit it out of the park but surpassed all expectations. After an exhilarating evening of power-hitting, Guerrero Jr. emerged as the champion by defeating Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays with a score of 25-23 in the final matchup. In the first round, the Blue Jays' first baseman squared off against Mookie Betts, the right fielder of the LA Dodgers. Guerrero Jr. comfortably outperformed Betts with a convincing 26-11 victory. Next up was Julio Rodríguez, the star player of the Seattle Mariners, who had set a new single-round record of 41 home runs in his clash against Pete Alonso, surpassing Guerrero Jr.'s previous record from 2019. In a second-round thriller, Guerrero Jr. narrowly outshined Rodríguez, securing a 21-20 win. The 24-year-old phenom equaled Rodríguez's tally in the dying seconds, only to secure the victory with a winning homer in the bonus time. Facing Arozarena in the final showdown, Guerrero Jr. was on the verge of etching his name in history, and he did just that. Despite the formidable challenge, the three-time All-Star did enough to emulate his father's triumph and claim the coveted trophy. Reflecting father's in 2007, Guerrero Jr. remarked, "To be honest, I don't recall much about 2007. But I feel fantastic, immensely happy and proud that my father and I both have won the Derby," as reported by MLB.com. When asked who would win in a classic matchup between himself and his father, the 2023 HR Derby champion diplomatically responded, "If it's based on time, with the clock, I'll emerge victorious. If it's based on outs, he'll have the edge." The All-Star break continues with the highly anticipated main event, the All-Star game, scheduled for Tuesday.
